What Hiring Managers Told Us About Recruitment

We recently reviewed survey feedback from Hiring Managers across a range of organisations and sectors. The question was simple: What do you actually want from Recruitment Partners? The answers weren’t complicated, but they were consistent:

Fewer CVs better judgement Hiring Managers don’t want inboxes full of profiles sent without consent or context. They want a small number of candidates who are genuinely right. Screening candidates shouldn’t feel like a second job.

Clear, consistent communication Silence, slow updates, or vague answers erode trust quickly. Hiring Managers value Recruitment Partners who communicate early, clearly and honestly especially when there are constraints or delays.

Understanding the business, not just the role Job titles aren’t enough. Managers want Recruitment Partners who understand their environment, pressures, culture and constraints – particularly in regulated or high-pressure and secure settings.

Respect for reality Recruitment freezes, scaled-back roles, and financial pressures are part of the landscape. Recruitment Partners who acknowledge this rather than pushing for vacancies that don’t exist stand out.

Reliability over persistence Being chased repeatedly doesn’t build relationships. Doing what you say you’ll do, when you say you’ll do it, does.

Value that matches cost Fees aren’t the issue when quality is there. Cost becomes a problem when too many unsuitable profiles are shared and results don’t follow.

Better assessment, not just faster process Over-reliance on remote interviews leaves gaps. Hiring Managers want help assessing judgement, fit and performance under pressure not just availability.

Above all, Hiring Managers want help identifying the top 3–5 candidates they can hire with confidence (not a long list they have to filter themselves).

The reality? Hiring Managers aren’t asking Recruitment Partners to work harder.  They’re asking them to work smarter. Less noise. More insight. Better decisions. These turn recruitment from friction into support.

And the best part? None of these comments were about us.
