Routine

Everyone says its boring, and we should be spontaneous, fly by the seat of our pants and be unpredictable.

But let’s be honest, everyone has a routine of sorts.  The alarm tends to go off at the same time each morning, the pips on the radio signal when you need to leave the house for work, or school.  Routine is an unconscious happening.

And we don’t know we’re in a routine until for some reason, it stops.

It can be unsettling, not to have the security, the comfort blanket of knowing what needs to happen and at what time. so routine can be good and it can be reassuring.

  • Until it doesn’t work for you.
  • Until you have a routine that is negatively impacting on the day-to-day stuff.
  • Until it is a routine that is unfulfilling, unproductive, time-wasting and costing you money.

The routine might be a sausage roll on the way to work from your favourite Café; a ‘lunchbreak’ taken at your desk; repeatedly ordering the same things online without looking at the alternatives; spending an hour scrolling through your phone looking at Instagram when you know you could be doing so much more

Routine can act like blinkers on a horse. It can narrow your vision, make you miss what’s right next to you, it can keep your eyes fixed forward and unable to see the bigger picture.

And that is what is happening with your PSL. Your Preferred Supplier List.

You have a vacancy.  You routinely send it out to your suppliers on the PSL.  You go through the motions of doing what has always been done – after all, the PSL has been set in stone since 2004 and nothing will change that.

But what if that routine is negatively impacting on the day to day running of your company?  A routine that is giving you unfulfilling CVs, a PSL that is being unproductive, time-wasting and costing you money?

The existing PSL is a comfort blanket, it is an established routine that has been in place since way before you joined the company.  IT CANNOT BE CHANGED.

Or can it?

Breaking the routine might just bring you a fresh outlook on the PSL.  Taking the blinkers off will open your eyes to discover who else is out there.  Bringing in new suppliers who will naturally do things differently could have a positive impact on the day to day running of the company.

They will introduce new and interesting talent into the mix, show you just how recruitment should be done and actively demonstrate other ways that really are better, more time-efficient, more cost-effective and enjoyable.

Meaning that new employees stay longer, they generate income and opportunities, inject energy and enthusiasm into the workplace.  Is that what is missing?

Routine. It’s not for everyone.
