I travelled 90 minutes – but all I got was cake and chaos

These days do you consider hybrid working to be a fair compromise, or actually just false flexibility?

With some companies insisting now on working one or two days in the office, does this bring a new level of frustration to the working week?

Let’s be honest, going into the office used to be simple: you travelled in, got ready for the day and knew there’d be a banana in your desk if you got hungry at about 10:20. Now? It’s a game of who gets the good desk and hoping you don’t end up sitting next to the printer again.

#thecommute Is two days-a-week really worth that 90-minute journey each way? For some, it’s necessary, but after all that time spent in transit, you’d expect the office to offer more than endless chit-chat by the coffee machine and meetings that could’ve been emails.

#theoffice You’re finally settled at your desk ready to work… but then:

  • People start popping by for ‘quick catch-ups’ that somehow turn into 20-minute detours filled with weekend recaps and Netflix recommendations.
  • Privacy? Forget it. Try taking a phone call while someone hovers by your desk, using their best interpretive mime to ask how long you’ll be….
  • Loud renditions of Happy Birthday are being sung by a group gathering at the desk next to you, while you try to host a Teams meeting.  nothing says ‘focus’ more than that.

So when you’re constantly battling distractions, interruptions, and the search for quiet time, it’s easy to wonder, ‘couldn’t I have done this from my home office in half the time?’

The hours spent trying to focus in a communal space don’t always add up.

So, here’s the question: Would you apply for a job that required you to be in the office two days a week? Even if the job was perfect in every other way, would the mandatory office time put you off?

OR do you view going into the office as a welcome break, a chance to have in-person meetings and genuine conversations with colleagues that alleviate the isolation of working from home?

Are you more productive when you work in the office?
